    Summary: 
    Set in 1937, the movie depicts the experiences of two brothers as gold miners during Japanese occupation of Taiwan. After escaping from indentured servitude to Gold Toad Mountain, they rent a small room from Arou, a twice-widowed woman who has restored to prostitution to keep her children fed and clothed. Meanwhile, the gold rush has plunged the town into smuggling and prostitution, and Japan's attempt at 'rehabilitation' leads to disatrous consequences.
