Summary:
Shandong Province is located at the eastern end of the Yellow Plain. The eastern side of it is a peninsula, surrounded by water on three sides. The Shandong Hills in the southeast are steep and seemingly endless plain is province's best farmland. The province covers a total area of 47,000 square kilometers and has a population of 74.94 million, which makes it the nation's third most populous, behind Sichuan and Henan. Shandong was one of the first areas of China to be developed. Its farming is extremely prosperous. Now more than 60 percent of land in the province is for farming. The Yellow River and the Grand Canal are its major interior waterways. Shandong is the site of the ancient Kingdom of Lu, the homeland of Confucius and a symbol of the glory of ancient Chinese culture. Therefore, the province is known as "Lu" as well for more than 2,000 years. The people of Shandong have taken pride of the legacy of Confusius and Mencius with exalting integrity and respectin knowledge.
