This entire area has a population of 61 million over a total area of 103,000 square kilometers. Because of the rich soil and convenient irrigation from Yangzi River, this area prospered and was the central part of the kingdom of Ton-wu in early 6th century B.C. The dense network of irrigation system and waterways plus good crops of cotton and silk, provides this area with a strong base for a complex textile industry. Suzhou is a city with rich historical background. Suzhou of Jiangsu Province together with Hangzhou of Zhejiang Province have long been praised as "The earthly paradise of China."
